It is always nice to have a cozy place to go when temperatures begin to fall. However, you may find that rodents feel the same way. As winter hits around 21 million rodents seek food and shelter in American homes. Seeds and plant life are the usual diet of rodents, however when it gets cold outside this supply dries up, in a bid to find food rodents will rush to human structures. There are seemingly small holes and openings that mice and rats can use to enter homes. You may think you have no cracks big enough but all a rat needs is a 1/2 inch opening, while a mouse can get through something as small as 1/4 inch. Because of their agile ability to climb, trees or exterior piping can also allow a rodent to enter your homes through exterior vents or various utility openings high above ground level. Having rodents infest your home can be dangerous to your health and life. Rodents are seen as a fire hazard the world over, this is down to their continual gnawing of electrical wiring, they are also bad for your health thanks to the many diseases they carry and spread through excrement and bites.

 

200 human pathogens have been detected in rodents. There are some diseases that could actually be deadly, such as Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) or the plague. Statistics from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention show HPS as being identified in 30 states within the last 14 years, it is spread by deer mice in their saliva, fecal matter and urine. Out of the 465 cases the CDCP knows about, almost 35% resulted in fatalities.

 

There are also 12 cases of the plague reported in the United States each year, although this is obviously a very rare ailment. The connection between the health of humans and the presence of rodents has been a long standing cause for concern. During the 14th century the plague destroyed many lives in Europe, spread by rats it is clear how dangerous they can be, especially when you consider they still carry dangerous diseases to this day. Do not get too worried however, only very few diseases rodents carry are deadly, although infestations should still not be taken lightly. A rodent invasion is not an indication of unclean conditions, though many people believe this. Although it is true that a dirty home full of clutter with sources of food all over the place is very enticing to rodents, even a clean house can find itself home to opportunistic rodents. There are some signs that you can look for to determine whether you have rodents in your home or not. There are some easily spotted marks of a rodent presence such as dark colored droppings about 1/4 to 1/2 in length, oily smears along walls that they pass by frequently, food boxes, door frames or furniture legs that have been gnawed, and any rustling sounds or other sounds of movement that seem to come from pantries, walls or ceilings.

 

The minute you think you have an infestation you should phone a pest control operator. A combination of rodent pesticides and bait traps are most commonly used to eliminate rodents from homes or other structures. You could do this yourself but a trained professional will implement these methods with a greater degree of efficiency and success. In order to avoid the possibility of rodent encroachment, here are some tips you should follows to maintain a rodent free home. * Firewood should be stored away from the home and should be kept up and off the ground. Get rid of any debris, brick or rock piles in your yard. Such things will shelter rodents and could even hide cracks or holes in the walls of your home that allow access inside.

 

Check your house for any holes or cracks and make sure you seal any that are larger than 1/4 inch. You can stuff larger openings with wire mesh or steel wool before sealing to ensure that access is denied. Cover all foundation and attic vents with tightly fitting 1/4 inch hardware cloth to prevent entry. The methods you can use to prevent insect infestation will not be effective against rodents, so be sure to install tight weather stripping. Be certain you have no trees over hanging your home which can be used by rodents to climb up and gain access, also cut back any shrubbery that is too close to the side of your home.
