According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, the state of California leads all other states in the number of cars stolen in 2010. Including Washington State, the two states account for more than 64,000 stolen vehicles. States with the most theft are Fresno, Modest, Bakersfield and Spokane.
Although this news may sound gloomy for residents of California and Washington, the ICB report also shows that theft of cars continue to fall and have been falling for the last seven years. The statistics show a decline of 7.2 percent since 2009. If correct, then the number of thefts is at its lowest point since 1967. However, the top five localities on the list — Fresno, Modesto, Spokane and Vallejo — have experienced higher theft rates over 2009.
The states that follow California with the most thefts are: Texas, Florida, New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Arizona, Maryland, Georgia and Nevada. Moreover, a manufacturer of a theft recovery system, Lojack has released its own annual report of cars stolen and recovered with the assistance of its system. The report shows that the cars with the best fuel economy are being targeted by thieves. Over 10,000 cars were sold in 2010 and around 57 percent were found.
Of the newer cars less than 5 years old that were stolen last year, the 2007 and 2009 Toyota Camry are settled at number one and two respectively. Following the 2009 Camry is the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado, 2007 Cadillac Escalade and 2006 Ford F-250 Series .

The Lojack system includes a receiver and transponder. The transponder is hidden in the car and the receiver is installed on the dashboards of police cars. When the car is stolen, the owner is supposed to notify the police. Ther transponder sends a signal to the receiver in the police car. Lights on the receiver guide police to the location of the car.
