There are ‘quick fixes’ for most any problem, but what you want as a homeowner is to correct the root cause and prevent it from recurring. Unfortunately, not a lot of air conditioning professionals are good at this. There is a quick way to find out if you are dealing with a good air conditioning service professional or just someone that installs new systems.
A good air conditioning service technician is looking to build his reputation within his service area and will work with you over the phone at no cost to help minimize the service call fee. A few of the standard question you should hear will be like:
Is it blowing but not cooling, or does nothing happen when you turn it on?
What are your current thermostat settings?
Has this ever happed before? What was done to correct it?
On the other hand, someone that installs home air conditioners who calls himself an air conditioning ‘professional’ will not go through these trouble shooting steps with you free of charge. He or his company secretary will just get your name, address and phone number. Then they will inform you of how much the service call will cost, and worst of all what hours you need to take off of work to be at home waiting for him to arrive. When he gets there he will look around and rule out any obvious quick fixes. If any sort of non-trivial repair is needed (particularly non-warranty repairs), then rest assured that his recommendation will be for you to buy a new one. Service calls are a nuisance to him. He makes his real money installing new systems.
There will be those times when investing in a new air conditioner is realy the best solution. When you eventually have to ‘bite the bullet’, be sure to explore the Internet for the lastest air conditioners and prices that works best for you in your home. Also, references are one of the best ways to find quality trusted service professionals so be sure to ask around to satified customers. Make sure that is it someone that knows not only how to install a new system, but someone that is capable of servicing existing equipment regardless of its warranty status. After you have created a short list, contact them to find out the extent of their experience with the specific make and model you are considering. If so, see if they will provide you with references.
