It must be admitted that some specific branch of knowledge still a gray area to the search engines of the Internet no matter how intelligent it has now become. This have instigated the gracious duo, Answers. Com and Ask. com, to commit to giving more competent answers to the challenging and blunt questions about history, science, geography, pop culture and sports. More information on the topic of search engine optimization is located at website marketing.
Both search engines pointed to provide a correct answer explicitly at the top of a search’s first results page or with a highly placed link to a Web page that contains the information. Just looking at the mission statement makes me think twice, however. In reality, how much do these search engines know? To find out, I staged a very unscientific test consisting of questions culled from a recent edition of the game, trivial pursuit. Answers. Com and Ask. Com’s avowed prowess against Internet’s most widely used searched engines were pitted by my game Trivial Pursuit imitating game.
Solely basing on my findings, I can say that Answers. Com and Ask. Com made an obvious advantage over Yahoo and MSN when dealing with such unfathomable questions like, what glass beads are created when a meteorite strikes the earth’s surface, but just had a small step ahead of Google. Answers. Com and Ask. Com alike led me to tektites, the correct answer, with the first link on the results page, which was a performance displayed to 10 questions out of 20 during the game.
Their performance, though kindred, did not grow out from the same strategy. The latter banks on the joint abilities of Google’s search engine and human editors who have fueled its data pool with solutions to frequently asked questions which they have amassed from 101 percent attention to their resource materials. An ecommerce composite organization took in Ask. Com to be a Web family member for 2 billion dollars, and this search engine operates on searching the Net in a process independent from human intervention. Although they are superior to the other search engines at this task, Answers and Ask rarely realized their ultimate goal making things as clear cut as possible by summarizing the correct response at the very top of the results page so it wouldn’t be necessary to click on a link and use another Web site. Ask. Com did display an abridged and correct answer in just two of the 20 questions, while the only time Answers. Com did a quick one was when I sought for Google’s definition.
Including the question on tektites, there were only eight out of the 20 questions that came up with the correct answer on the first link among the frequent searches on the internet. One astounding question stood above the rest and baffled the contending search engines. Who was the first Cuban player to become delinquent to major league baseball? The correct answer is Rene who played and pitched for the Cardinals in the early 1990s, and none of the parties led me to any link.
Albeit obvious loss in this contest, MSN did look good in one of the questions. Find the company for which the highest recorded buyout deal was made. The topmost link on MSN’s list of results accompanied me to the accurately listed Nabisco Subsidiary. I have also learned from this test how depending on search engines become detrimental by its tendency to lead us to sites with diverging answers.
I saw this clearly when I asked the population of the viewers of the series finale of the TV show mash. The participants led us to Websites giving the audience’s population to be anywhere between 105. 9 million to nearly 125 million. Changing a few words in a popular movie soundtrack, I would like to say searching for online data remains to be troublesome.
